The LightHouse by Mackintosh

Diseñado en 1895 como una bodega de impresión para el diario de Glasgow, The Lighthouse es un centro de arquitectura y diseño, ubicado en el centro de Glasgow Escocia es el primer proyecto que le fue encomendado al arquitecto Charles Rennie mejor conocido como Mackintosh.

Este centro nos ofrece un recorrido a través del tiempo, recorriendo sus diversas salas y pisos, siendo el mejor lugar para iniciar un tour, para entender la arquitectura de Mackintosh y las tendencias que definieron a Glasgow. En el primer piso encontraremos una galería de muebles hechos a base de madera, todos bajo la premisa de ser elaborados por gente local que usa y conoce las tendencias del lugar; mostrando desde los diseños sencillos hasta los mas elaborados y estrafalarios. El MakLab se encuentra también dentro de este nivel, el cual nos muestra el impacto que tiene la arquitectura con el medio ambiente y que se esta haciendo para reducir dicho impacto ambiental. Esta iniciativa tambien ofrece la oportunidad de crear nuevos proyectos, experimentando con materiales reales podras darte cuenta si es efectivo en tu proyecto; esta interacción con los materiales y sus especificaciones técnicas nos dan un acercamiento con la realidad como nunca antes se ha visto. Solamente se necesita de una idea para que en MakLab te ayuden a usar la mejor tecnología en materiales para que logres realizar tu proyecto.

Pasando al segundo nivel nos encontraremos con la historia que envuelve a la arquitectura en Glasgow y los orígenes de esta. La galería nos muestra una parte del legado del arquitecto Mackintosh, maquetas, dibujos, sketches  que sumado a la tendencia del Art Nouveau logra consumar su trabajo y plasmar el estilo escocés a todos sus proyectos. Llegando a ser uno de los representantes del Art Nouveau en el Reino Unido teniendo en cuenta lo corto que duro su carrera.

Page & Park Architects fueron los encargados de la integración y adecuación del proyecto, ofreciendo un centro integral donde se puede disfrutar de la arquitectura, el diseño, historia y una de las mejores vistas panorámicas de Glasgow se logra concebir en la punta mas alta del faro; al cual se sube a través de unas escaleras sujetas a tensores de metal, lo cual nos da una vista mas clara y natural de las escaleras.

The Scotsman Stairs

Edinburgh is a city full of medieval and modern architecture,  in which you can find a lot of thing to do. Starting with the medieval castle and ending with a visit to the Scott Monument. The city is divided in two parts; the old city has all the historic heritage in the buildings, with the castle being the most representative building in this part of the city, the new city has all the modern components.

Located in the old city, the castle has been important for the region since the Iron Age, more recent history includes an invasion by Oliver Cronwell and the safe keeping of The Honours of Scotland. In one of those buildings we can find  Martin Creed´s work piece No. 1059, which was commissioned by The Fruitmarket Gallery. The Scotsman Steps are considered as a thoroughfare and have been renovated  by the City of Edinburgh Council; the Old and New Towns are linked by the public space therefore, the feeling while walking in this public space is like going around the world.

With the purpose of resurfacing the old stair, the Scotsman Steps introduced 104 different marbles; ranging from the white, blue and orange shiny stones to red or green colours, each cut into the shape of each step to create a moment of beauty. Bringing to the people a possibility to have some Italian style in Edinburgh, as the italian cities have been designed with marble, these steps could pass as a Catholic architecture work in the heart of Edingburgh. When standing at the top of the Scotsman Steps you have an astonishing panoramic view of the city. White Hat Architecture  recommends  that all  architectonic public interventions provide a contribution to the World, whether it is enriching a city or restoring a historic area.

Everyday you can walk through the Scotsman Steps and the feeling will be different than the day before, for Edinburgh´s people it is part of their history.
